New Permanent Residence pathway for short-term 482 & 457 visa holders
Starting on 1 July 2022,
A person on a 482 or 457 visa who
- has been in Australia for at least 12 months between 1 February 2020 and 14 December 2021; and
- is employed by a business that is actively and lawfully operating in Australia;
Can apply for Employer-sponsored PR.
This was previously impossible for short-term 482 and 457 visa holders.
The employee still needs to meet all the normal rules including,
- Minimum 3 years on a 482 or 457 visa
- Minimum 3 years work experience in that job, less Covid concessions
This is not the broad-brush solution we have been hoping for, but it provides a window of opportunity to many workers who are presently in Australia.
I acknowledge that sunflowers have little to do with this topic, they just felt right here. This news will be very welcome to many people who have been living in temporary-visa-limbo for years.
